What this site is
Maplequarry is an independent travel-planning guide with two parts: an aurora-viewing likelihood guide for northern Canada, and a catalogue of hotels across Canada. It is not a booking platform, not a live weather or forecasting service, and not affiliated with any airline, tour operator, hotel or government tourism authority. We do not take reservations or payments.
What our servers receive
Like every web server, ours receives technical information with each request: your IP address, the page requested, the date and time, and your browser and device type. We use it to deliver pages, keep the site secure and find errors.
Local storage
The site stores one small flag in your browser’s local storage to remember that you have dismissed the cookie notice, and a flag for your mobile-menu state. They stay in your browser and are not sent to us.
The aurora instrument and the hotel catalogue
The region and month you choose in the Maplequarry instrument, and the search box and filters of the hotel catalogue, run entirely in your browser. What you select or type there is not sent to us.
Google Ads tag
We use a Google Ads tag to measure how our advertising performs. The tag loads from Google when you open a page. It may set or read Google cookies in your browser and sends Google information such as your IP address, the pages you view and technical details of your device. Google acts under its own privacy policy. You can prevent it by blocking Google Ads and tag scripts in your browser or with a content blocker, or by clearing Google cookies. This is the only advertising or measurement service on the site.
Google Fonts
The site’s fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, so your browser requests the font files from Google, which receives your IP address and the usual request details.
Hotel photos from Hotelbeds
Photos in the hotel catalogue load directly from the Hotelbeds photo servers (photos.hotelbeds.com). When a page with photos loads, your browser contacts that server, which receives your IP address and request details.
Maps
Hotel pages offer a Google map. It is not loaded automatically: your browser connects to Google Maps only after you click “Load map”. Links to maps open those services in a new tab under their own policies.
Contact form and email
If you use the contact form, we store the name, email address and message you submit, together with the time of submission and your IP address, in order to read and answer your message. If you write to us by email, we use your address and message to reply. We keep this correspondence only as long as needed for that purpose, and it is not sold or shared with advertisers.
Third-party links
Pages link to external resources such as NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center and Aurorasaurus, and hotel pages link to the hotels’ own websites. Those sites have their own privacy practices, which this policy does not cover.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal data we hold about you, to object to its processing and to complain to your local data-protection authority. To use these rights, write to us.
Changes
We may update this policy; the date at the top shows the latest version.
